Over the past few years coconut oil has been the latest trend to hit the West. However for many cultures around the world the benefits of coconut oil have been passed down for centuries. I've listed 8 of my favourites below. Enjoy!
Cooking at High Heat
Coconut oil is perfect for any cooking done at a high heat because of its very high smoke point. Coconut oil is made of healthy saturated fats which keep them stable at a high temperature, many other oils are not able to do this as they begin to oxidise quicker.
Natural Throat Lozenge
A shop bought lozenge is usually full of artificial flavours and colours. If you add coconut oil to your traditional lemon and honey remedy and do this 3 times a day you’ll have the perfect combination for battling a cold and soothing a sore throat.
Coconut oil can be used to fight pre-mature ageing. I apply a small amount underneath my eyes combined with Lavender oil (which tones and lifts the skin) and let it soak in throughout the night. Other oils that also have anti ageing properties are Jojoba oil, Frankincense oil and Pomegranate seed oil.
Natural Makeup Remover
The benefits of using coconut oil rather then shop bought make-up removers is that it’ll moisturise your skin without causing any irritation. Rub the coconut oil into your skin in a circular motion then wipe off with a warm towel. Believe me, your skin will feel amazing by the end!
Lock in Moisture After Showers
After your shower, apply coconut oil to your body, do this within 3 minutes. Coconut oil will help lock the moisture into your skin, and helps to soothe skin after any irritation such as shaving or waxing.
Coconut Oil Pulling
Coconut oil has antibacterial properties so is the perfect oil for oil pulling. It is used to remove toxins from the mouth killing bad breath, helps boost your immune system and cures tooth decay. All you need to do is swish 1 tablespoon of coconut oil for 15 minutes in your mouth after brushing your teeth. Make sure not to swallow. Spit the oil into the trash as it can clog drains as it solidifies when cool.
Coconut oil’s natural antibacterial properties helps kill the bacteria that can cause body odour. It’s perfectly fine to use as a deodorant on its own, however if you’re someone who sweats a lot try adding some bicarbonate of soda which absorbs any moisture.
One thing that comes with great weather are insects. Coconut oil can be used as a natural insect repellent by adding a few drops of peppermint, rosemary and tea tree oil. This will help repel flies, mosquitos and bees.
